There is a void at third base for the New York Yankees going into the 2024 summer, but Oswald Peraza, an internal promotion, may be the team’s choice to replace it.
The Yankees’ payroll is excessive
The Yankees payroll is notoriously high, as evidenced by the salaries of Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodon, Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, Anthony Rizzo, and DJ LeMahieu, who each make at least $27 million.
In addition, the Yankees have discussed trading for Padres outfielder Juan Soto and have expressed interest in Japanese sensation pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto.
The Yankees may need to look for home-grown options at third base
In order to fill voids in multiple positions in 2024, the New York Yankees and Hal Steinbrenner will need to consider internal options given their heavy reliance on free agents and big contract extensions like Aaron Judge’s $360 million deal.
The Yankees may turn to Oswald Peraza in the near future to cover Josh Donaldson’s departure.
Peraza needs big league at-bats
With a brief tenure in 2022 and a back-and-forth stint in 2023, Peraza’s inconsistent playing as a major league player was the main issue with the Yankees’ staff’s treatment of him. Peraza has made 729 plate appearances at Triple-A with a 107 wRC+, 33 total home runs, and since 2022. Given his length of stay at Triple-A and his positive outcomes each time he is sent down there, it might be time to graduate Peraza all the way to the Major League Baseball.
Peraza’s brief stay in the major leagues hasn’t gone as planned. He posted a 147 wRC+ on a relatively small sample in September and early October of 2022, out of his 51 plate appearances. However, his 191 plate appearances in 2023 produced a -0.3 fWAR and a 53 wRC+. This results from a.083 batting average and.133 slugging percentage in 2023, which is caused by a failure to convert fastballs.
Despite these inadequacies, Peraza was still unable to obtain enough at-bats to evaluate players thoroughly; the primary problem stemmed from DJ LeMahieu or Donaldson playing third base. On November 7, General Manager Brian Cashman answered questions from media about Peraza’s usage in the major leagues and whether it’s because of his underwhelming performance thus far.
“Peraza isn’t getting regular reps; he has Gleyber, Volpe, and LeMahieu now, and Donaldson before that,” Cashman remarked.
With Donaldson out of the picture and Anthony Rizzo’s health at first base unknown, Peraza is in a great position to obtain at-bats so the Yankee coaching staff can assess him effectively.
The Yankees’ youth movement
The Yankees’ continued push of young players from their farm system to the major leagues is a major factor in their decision to bring Peraza in. Just in 2023, the Yankees summoned up Anthony Volpe, Austin Wells, Jasson Dominguez, and Everson Pereira to fill up for injured players and give the prospects an opportunity to impress the coaching staff.
During their brief tenure from August to early October, all of these players were able to demonstrate glimpses of starting talent and were, at that point, the high point of a disappointing season.
The Yankees may be taking a new turn with Peraza taking over for Donaldson, presumably to make room for DJ LeMahieu. Prospects Spencer Jones, Drew Thorpe, and Chase Hampton might be calling the Yankees soon.
