Yankees Top Prospect Hits a High Home Run in Spring Training

Spencer Jones, a New York Yankees outfield prospect, hit one of the longest home runs seen throughout spring training.

Spencer Jones, one of the top outfield prospects in baseball, is well-known to the Yankees. He has a reputation for hitting home homers.

But the one he did in spring training on Saturday was absolutely spectacular.

Jones blasted his first home run of the spring in the fifth inning against Detroit Tigers pitcher Mason Englert at the Yankees’ Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, Florida.

It wasn’t simply a home run, however. Jones, a left-handed hitter, struck it like a golf stroke, sending the ball skyward. MLB.com estimates that the ball went 470 feet. The wind was blowing out of right field, according to MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch, yet the ball still landed over the bullpens and onto the concourse.

It’s just one reason MLB.com ranks him as the Yankees’ top prospect. It was also the reason three other clubs coveted him in trades or proposed trades, including the one the Yankees eventually made to get Juan Soto.

When the Yankees expressed interest in Corbin Burnes when he was still in Milwaukee, Jones was part of the Brewers’ request in exchange. Burnes wound up in Baltimore. The same was true for a prospective trade to acquire Chicago White Sox pitcher Dylan Cease.

The Yankees declined on all three times, indicating that they anticipate a bright future for him in the Bronx — or that they expect a far higher return.

Last year, Jones reached Double-A Somerset and hit.267/.336/.444/.780 with 16 home runs, 66 RBI, 29 doubles, and four triples.
