Yankees Release Veteran Utility Man Following Unexpectedly Brief Organizational Stay

New York has made it quite evident this summer that they intend to compete in 2024. Superstar slugger Juan Soto was acquired by the Yankees from the San Diego Padres in what was perhaps the greatest transaction of the summer.

This summer, the Yankees have also made a few changes to strengthen their organization’s depth. To create space on the roster, New York added more players on Monday, claiming former Toronto Blue Jays and Houston Astros pitcher Matt Gage and designating utility player Diego Castillo for assignment, the team announced.

“Earlier today, the Yankees claimed (left-handed pitcher) Matt Gage off waivers from the Houston Astros,” the club said. “To make room on the 40-man roster, the Yankees designated (infielder/outfielder) Diego Castillo for assignment.”
