Yankees pitcher will start rehab assignment on Sunday and may return soon after

New York fans should be excited as the club starts to get reinforcements back

The New York Yankees may soon have one of their most critical bullpen pieces back.

New York has had a lot of success out of the bullpen this season, but it has also suffered with a number of injuries. Nick Burdi, a hard-throwing righty, has missed some time. The 31-year-old joined the Yankees out of Spring Training and has been a revelation in the bullpen.

Burdi hasn’t allowed an earned run in seven outings this season and has eight strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings pitched. He has been suffering with right hip discomfort, but he will start a rehab assignment with the Double-A Somerset Patriots on Sunday, according to Chris Kirschner of The Athletic.

“Nick Burdi will throw in a rehab game on Sunday with Somerset,” Kirschner told ESPN.

The fact that he is feeling healthy enough to play on Sunday is a positive omen. New York’s bullpen has been excellent this season, but it has been stretched thin due to the numerous injuries.

Burdi’s eventual return will provide the Yankees with another great arm and, perhaps, relieve some of the pressure on the bullpen by adding depth.

New York has found ways to win games despite a slew of ailments. The fact that the club will begin to get reinforcements shortly should terrify rival teams. New York is already a World Series contender, but Burdi will help them improve even further.
