Yankees are interested in signing a former player who is currently a free agent

According to Will Sammon of The Athletic, the New York Yankees are one of the teams interested in signing free agent third baseman Gio Urshela.

Urshela had a breakout season with the Yankees between 2019 and 2021, and he spent three seasons in the Bronx. He hit.292 with a.815 OPS and 41 home runs in 291 games.

In March 2022, he was dealt to the Minnesota Twins, then in 2023, he was traded to the Los Angeles Angels. He has been playing in the Colombian Winter League this winter after breaking his pelvis but without requiring surgery.

Urshela is known as an above-average infield regular, with a.291/.335/.452 slash line and a 115 wRC+ over the last five seasons with the Yankees, Twins, and Angels.

Despite his recent injury, he remains one of the better infield alternatives available this offseason.

Urshela also mentioned how much he enjoyed playing for the Yankees in an interview with NJ Advance Media. He stated,

“It’s always special (to return).” “I have a lot of fond memories of New York.”

If he returns to the Yankees, he will most likely play third base when DJ LeMahieu is unavailable and shortstop when Anthony Volpe is unavailable.

If second baseman Gleyber Torres isn’t available, Urshela may start at second or third base with LeMahieu at second.

According to sources, the Yankees are interested in reuniting with free agent infielder Gio Urshela.
