As the 2024 NFL Draft approaches, one of the most divisive possibilities is Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy. McCarthy started the final two seasons for the Michigan Wolverines, making the College Football Playoffs as a sophomore and winning the National Championship as a junior.

Despite the team’s success, McCarthy was not the driving force behind Michigan’s offense, as several elite quarterback prospects were for their respective teams.

McCarthy attempted just 332 passes in 2023, completing 72.3% of them for 2,291 yards, 22 touchdowns, and four interceptions.

McCarthy added 202 rushing yards and three more touchdowns. However, when compared to other elite quarterback prospects such as Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels, and Michael Penix Jr., all of whom threw for over 3,500 yards, McCarthy lacks the production to compete.

However, it is not his fault that he played for a championship-winning club. To McCarthy’s credit, when his number was called, he delivered.

However, when it comes to the draft, teams must ask these questions to ensure they select the correct quarterback. J.J. McCarthy is undeniably gifted, but how talented is he? That is the question NFL teams are asking.

The New Orleans Saints might be considering that subject. There is no doubt that the Saints still need to identify their quarterback of the future, and one analyst feels McCarthy might be that player.

Are the Saints the right fit for J.J. McCarthy?

Robert Turbin, a former NFL running back and current NFL Network commentator, recently detailed why he thinks New Orleans is the best fit for McCarthy. Turbin stated that McCarthy would not have to play right away since he could develop behind Derek Carr. McCarthy would be prepared to take over once the Saints were ready to move on from Carr.

Beyond that, Turbin feels Klint Kubiak’s pro-style approach is comparable to the one J.J. McCarthy ran with Jim Harbaugh at Michigan. This would make McCarthy’s move to the professionals easier.

While both of these are valid concerns, it is crucial to consider if McCarthy is a good match for the Saints. More particular, New Orleans will have to consider if McCarthy is worth choosing at 14.

With such a high draft pick, the Saints cannot afford to waste it on a quarterback who could one day be the guy. If McCarthy is available in the second or later rounds, he should be selected. However, at 14, New Orleans must confront a more important issue.
