Premier League commentator Alan Shearer has cautioned Burnley that they need to figure out how to handle teams pressuring them up the pitch.

It comes after the Clarets were caught in possession for both of Bournemouth’s goals during their 2-1 triumph on Saturday.

Players taking far too long on the ball and getting dispossessed too easily as a result has been a recurrent feature of their season.

Shearer stated on Match of the Day, “You know against this Burnley side if you get it right, like [Antoine] Semenyo did for the first goal, you’ll get a bit of joy.”

“It’s a really good finish, they win the ball up high and are in on goal.”

“With [Philip] Billing, it’s the same situation [for the second goal]. They triumph at the midway point, and the conclusion is incredible. However, since Burnley isn’t very good at it and they give you opportunities, everything comes from the press.

This season, we have saw it occur previously, and we have also witnessed their punishment. We witnessed it at Newcastle, where they believed they had enough time to turn the ball, but at this level, you can’t achieve that. Teams will act appropriately when you are shut down, and you will suffer consequences.

“They tried to play out, they lost it on the turnover, and they were punished. It was similar against Chelsea. That’s how many goals they throw away.

“I know that’s how Kompany wants them to play, but you’re going to score goals against Burnley if you apply the proper pressure. They keep getting caught so frequently.

Ian Wright, Shearer’s colleague analyst and a former Claret, also offered commentary on the VAR issue that brought the game to a close at Vitality Stadium.

In the last moments of stoppage time, Kompany angrily criticized the referee for failing to investigate a possible handball as Sander Berge attempted to bundle the ball home from close range.

Wright stated, “I would agree with Vincent Kompany; he needs to look at that.”

They’re saying Sander Berge is fouling him, but he was grabbing onto his shirt for a while and wouldn’t even let it go. That’s when it all started, with [Charlie] Mepham holding onto him as well. He refused to take off his shirt, which is why his arm is up there. He raised his arm when he leaped.

“I believe Vincent Kompany is fully entitled to file a complaint. That was absurd that they simply dismissed it.”
