Why Alabama’s running back had more playing time in the Rose Bowl

In the Rose Bowl, freshman running back Justice Haynes played the most significant football he had ever played as an Alabama football player.

During the regular season, Haynes carried for 137 yards and two touchdowns on 21 attempts, the most of which came late in games. He also participated on special teams. It was unexpected to see the former five-star back early and often in the Rose Bowl versus Michigan.

Against the Wolverines, the Georgia product rushed for 31 yards on four carries. On “The Pat McAfee Show” on Thursday, Saban explained why Haynes played more in the Rose Bowl than he did in the regular season.

“He’s been an outstanding player for us all year long,” he stated. “The running back position was a bit of a stumbling block for us.” We had four guys who were all pretty good players, and each of them had a little injury or was out at some point during the season. So things worked out, because Roydell had a nasty ankle in this past game, which kind of opened the door for 22. However, when he had previous opportunities to play, he performed admirably. I believe he has a great future and will be a really, really good player.”

Haynes is returning to Tuscaloosa next season.
