What is the ideal approach for the Colts to step up this season?

The Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Tennessee Titans all had productive offseasons.

The Indianapolis Colts are the only AFC South team that has not made significant personnel improvements thus far.

The Colts have missed the playoffs each of the last three seasons, going 22-28-1 over that time. The Titans (2021), Jaguars (2022), and Texans (2023) have all won the division crown in the last three years.

According to Ari Meirov of The 33rd Team, the Colts have only made two moves this offseason: signing 39-year-old quarterback Joe Flacco and defensive tackle Raekwon Davis.

Flacco, a former Super Bowl MVP, has 245 regular-season passing touchdowns. He astonished the NFL by guiding the Cleveland Browns to the playoffs and earning the AP Comeback Player of the Year award.

The veteran is not going to Indianapolis to compete for the starting quarterback position. The Colts already have Anthony Richardson, the fourth overall pick in 2023 who is recuperating from shoulder surgery, as their starter under center.

The Miami Dolphins selected Davis 56th overall in the 2020 NFL Draft, but the Alabama product has unable to live up to the hype over his four-year career.

In 2023, the 26-year-old had career highs in quarterback hits (six) and tackles for loss (two), but finished with only 15 solo tackles and 0.5 sacks. Davis has 59 solo tackles, 10 quarterback hits, five tackles for loss, and 2.0 sacks across 63 regular-season games (48 starts).

In addition to the few additions, Indianapolis has seen running back Zack Moss and Pro Bowl quarterback Gardner Minshew II leave in free agency.

The Colts may make some moves later in the offseason and in the 2018 NFL Draft, but so far, the rest of their division has outperformed them in terms of roster growth.
