‘We can’t lose twice in a row,’ says Jameson Williams

Jameson Williams is now more at ease running the offense for the Lions.

Jameson Williams is not going to be mistaken for one of the NFL’s most productive receivers at this time. Still, it’s undeniable that the 2023 campaign has seen a steady improvement from the second-year receiver.

Naturally, as Williams has gotten more playing time in games, he has become more at ease in his role with the Lions. In addition, he’s started to demonstrate that he’s more than just a deep threat when it comes to stopping Ben Johnson’s offense.

Actually, Johnson has been feeding Williams a more consistent diet of short, intermediate targets over the last few weeks. Williams, who is renowned for his lightning-fast acceleration, has found it easier to enter open space over the middle of the field as a result.

Many just view me as the deep threat, but as receivers, there are other options available to us. I’ll stay on the shallow end; you can go deep. Receivers were informed by Williams on Thursday that “I can go deep, somebody can go across the middle.” It’s just people interacting with each other, then. It can sometimes only serve to open me up, and other times it can only serve to open someone else up.

Johnson’s offense contains a myriad of wrinkles, and is far from the most easy to grasp. In order to develop a good understanding of it, you need to devote an ample amount of time to learning it.

Williams is aware of the elaborate nature of Detroit’s offensive attack. And, as he’s gotten more and more comfortable with the intricate details of it, he believes he’s been able to improve his quality of play.

“(Understanding) the details, I would say, because in this offense, (knowing the) details is a really big part,” Williams said, in reference to the part of his game that has developed the most this year. “Getting lined up, getting set, knowing your assignment, things like that. So, I had to lock in on that for a good time. And then, once I got that down, everything started moving easier for me.”

In recent weeks, Williams, a product of the University of Alabama, has looked smoother running his routes, and has been a more productive member of the Lions’ offense.

He helped key the Lions’ comeback victory against the Bears in Week 11, hauling in a 32-yard reception touchdown with under 3:00 to play.

And, he followed that up by recording another nice outing on Thanksgiving against the Packers. He amassed two catches for 51 yards in the aforementioned NFC North divisional matchup.

For as good of a performance as it was for Williams, you won’t catch him saying that he was completely satisfied with his effort in the holiday affair. The reason why: Detroit ultimately suffered a loss in the Week 12 contest.

Williams is determined to help the Lions bounce back from the defeat (with a victory on Sunday against the Saints). It’s something that’s become commonplace for Dan Campbell’s squad. Detroit, remember, has gone through the first 12 weeks of the season without suffering back-to-back losses.

To Williams, it’s a credit to the tight-knit nature of the team.
