Watch: Chiefs rookie video of the event has gotten many thrilled

The 23-year-old Welshman left defenders trailing as he continued his NFL training with Kansas City Chiefs.

The Louis Rees-Zammit event has been captured on video, which has piqued the interest of Kansas City Chiefs fans and journalists.

Rees-Zammit can be seen using his rugby skills, collecting the ball and weaving his way through defenders with speed and agility. The NFL released the clip with the caption: “That’s why they call him Rees Lightning!”

Seeing Rees-Zammit leave numerous tacklers in his wake has electrified fans during his first week at the Super Bowl champs’ minicamp.

Jesse Newell of the Kansas City Star wrote: “During the Chiefs rookie minicamp, running back Louis Rees-Zammit broke away.

“When quarterback Chris Oladokun connected with him on a halfback screen, Rees-Zammit found himself in a familiar place, given his rugby background:

“Rees-Zammit accelerated in the middle of the field, eluding tacklers for more than 40 yards before being stopped by whistles.

“The moment flashed — if everything goes right — the type of skill the 23-year-old former Wales professional rugby player could bring to the Chiefs one day.”

When asked about this precise moment, the former Gloucester Rugby winger said, “It was great. When there are open fields, I feel as if I’m playing rugby again. I can use my awareness when I’m in space, which is when I can do the greatest damage. So, the more I can do that, the more I can contribute to the team.”

The 23-year-old has spent the past week in Kansas learning his job as a running back, having previously attended a camp with star quarterback Patrick Mahomes in Texas.

“It was amazing, all the quarterbacks and receivers were there, we were running routes, we were working in the gym,” Rees-Zammit recalled.

“It was definitely a great two weeks, I definitely learned a lot with Pat and the other boys.”
