Vols CB target has announce decision following Tennessee visit

After visiting Tennessee last weekend, one of the Vols’ top cornerback prospects in the 2025 class is about to announce his commitment.

Tre Poteat announced Tuesday morning that he is now ready to make his college decision, just over 48 hours after completing his official visit to Tennessee last weekend. The Class of 2025 cornerback from Verona Area High School in Verona, Wis., announced on his X account that he will to make his decision Tuesday afternoon, with the Vols being one of his two choices.

The 6-foot, 175-pound Poteat told GoVols247 on Sunday that he will choose between Tennessee and Wisconsin, both of which have welcomed him on official visits this month. He has received scholarship offers from around 20 schools.

Poteat is regarded as the No. 544 overall talent and No. 48 cornerback in the 2025 class, as well as the No. 4 rising senior from Wisconsin, according to the industry-generated 247Sports Composite. He is also a three-star prospect according to 247Sports, where he is ranked as the No. 53 cornerback in the 2025 class and the No. 4 rising senior in Wisconsin.

He’s the son of former NFL cornerback Hank Poteat, who now coaches cornerbacks at Iowa State. The Cyclones were one among the teams active in the younger Poteat’s recruitment for months, but he recently told GoVols247 that he had opted to follow his own path by not playing for his father in college.

Both projections on the 247Sports Crystal Ball have Tennessee as the favorite to land him. He has referred to the Vols as his leader on several occasions since March, and he stated Sunday that Tennessee was “in the front seat” following his weekend visit in Knoxville.

Poteat said he had fun “just putting all the pieces together” during his meeting with the Vols last weekend. He also went to Tennessee in November to watch the Vols’ home game versus Georgia, and he returned to Knoxville in April to watch the Vols’ walk-through before the Orange and White Game, which ended the spring season.

He received an offer from Tennessee in September and has had regular communication with the Vols in recent months. He added Sunday that he loved spending time with Tennessee coach Josh Heupel’s staff, notably defensive backs coach Willie Martinez, during the weekend and gaining a better sense of what the Vols have to offer.

“All the coaches had the same thing to say,” Poteat stated on Sunday. “My father asked smart questions, and the coaches consistently responded.

“I just received a full photo of Knoxville. I was able to watch practically everything, and it was enjoyable to simply hang around with the athletes and observe what they did.”

After visiting Tennessee for the third time in a little more than seven months, he said the Vols continued to stand out to him because of “just the consistency” they have had in courting him.

“Every time I talk to a coach, they’ve all got the same thing to say and it’s just great,” Poteat reported. “I love that.”
