Vincent Kompany adores the 21-year-old defender who Liverpool are interested in signing

Liverpool is thinking about making a move to acquire Ian Maatsen, the out-of-favor Chelsea left back.

Despite appearing in six of Chelsea’s nine games thus far, Maatsen has only played 84 minutes of Premier League football this season.

The 21-year-old has reportedly made the decision to leave Stamford Bridge in January, despite having been so close to joining Burnley this summer, according to TeamTALK.

After a productive loan stint last year, Burnley and Vincent Kompany are apparently still eager to get him back to Turf Moor. However, Maatsen is said to view the Clarets as a “no-go” location and would much prefer stay at a “top” team.

Liverpool is therefore said to be in the running. According to reports, Maatsen is a possible choice for Jurgen Klopp, who is eager to “add more quality” at left-back.

There are rumors that Manchester City is also hovering. According to reports, City discussed a potential deal with the Dutchman in July and would be willing to discuss it again.

Liverpool looking at Maatsen

Andy Robertson’s recent injury has drawn attention to Liverpool’s left-back position.

Robertson has rendered discussions over possible additions to the job entirely unnecessary for so many years. More than three years ago, Kostas Tsimikas was brought in as a backup, and since then, no further discussions have been required.

However, Liverpool does need to start considering this right away, given that Robertson will turn 30 in five months and Tsimikas hasn’t performed up to par.

They do have some young players that could be starters in the future. Luke Chambers and Calum Scanlon are both viewed with great expectations.

However, Maatsen would undoubtedly be an improvement above both academy players.

The Chelsea player has genuine promise; his former Coventry City boss, Mark Robins, called him a “top player” [Coventry Telegraph].

Maatsen, a Dutch U21 international, seems destined to start in the Premier League and should soon join the entire team.

Liverpool will need to act swiftly in the New Year if they believe he can eventually succeed Robertson.
