“Very fortunate” – Alan Shearer and an ex-ref concur with David Moyes regarding a significant Newcastle United incident.

Bruno Guimaraes, a midfielder for Newcastle United, should have been issued two cautions on Sunday at the London Stadium, according to Alan Shearer.

After a nasty foul in the center circle, the Brazilian was cautioned in the 16th minute and might have received a second caution just seconds later.

David Moyes said after the game that Guimaraes was “very lucky” not to have been sent off because Peter Bankes decided not to give him a second yellow. The all-time leading scorer for Newcastle United revealed that, like the former Everton and Manchester United boss, he believed Guimaraes ought to have been sent off.

On Match of the Day 2, Shearer stated: “I believed it should have been a red card. Just to be clear and to show there’s no bias. Two yellow cards, in my opinion, should have been issued.

Bruno didn’t agree with this one, but he does stick his leg out there, and it is appropriately a yellow card. Then, 90 seconds later, you get the second tackle; it was a shoddy pass from Tonali there, and he’s lucky.

“I think a yellow or a red card would have been the appropriate decision on another day, so Newcastle got away with one there,” said the commentator.

Dermot Gallagher, a former Premier League official, concurred with Shearer’s assessment and said Guimaraes was “extremely lucky” to escape receiving a second yellow card.

Gallagher said: “He is extremely, extremely lucky and if he gets a second yellow card there, then none of us are going to argue.” Gallagher was speaking on Sky Sports’ Ref Watch. Therefore, I believe he is quite fortunate.

It’s tough to say anything else besides that you expect him to go there. If Guimaraes had received a second yellow, nobody could have argued.

Instead, Guimaraes stayed on the field and was instrumental in his team’s comeback, lead, and eventual sharing of the spoils at the London Stadium thanks to Mohammed Kudus’ late goal. Guimaraes is now one yellow card away from a suspension, though, thanks to his recent infraction.

Given that the Brazilian has received four cautions, another one will automatically result in a one-match suspension. Anthony Gordon will be eligible for selection for the Magpies against Crystal Palace after serving his one-game suspension at the weekend.
