Update: Colts’ rookie wide receiver expected to play Sunday v Patriots

One of Indianapolis’ main playmakers will be available when the team plays the New England Patriots on Sunday.

Adam Schefter reports that Josh Downs, the rookie wide receiver for the Indianapolis Colts, is expected to play in Sunday’s game against the New England Patriots in Germany despite having a knee ailment that is categorized as questionable.

Schefter notes that even though Downs is anticipated to play, the Colts “may be cautious” in how they deploy the rookie throughout Sunday’s contest. Many people were a little surprised that Downs would be playing at all, so Indianapolis would be wise to minimize his involvement on Sunday.

This season, in nine games, Downs has played a major role in Indianapolis’ offensive performance. The rookie is a go-to target for experienced starting quarterback Gardner Minshew and has hauled in 41 receptions for 483 yards and two scores.

It’s important to keep an eye on Downs’ knee issue, which has prevented him from participating in any of the last two weeks’ three workouts. In Week 9, Downs had little action against the Carolina Panthers. Before leaving the game, he had one reception for ten yards.

The Colts may not be able to expect the same level of output and consistency from Downs on Sunday given his expected limited role. As a result, they will need some of their other veteran pass-catchers to show up big against the Patriots.
