Two greatest players the Lions should trade in the 2024 NFL offseason

Despite losing to the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship game, Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell’s brief time has been a huge success. He led the squad from three victories in 2021 to a couple plays away from the Super Bowl this season.

As this team enters the offseason, the prospects for the 2024 season are promising. The team has tremendous budget space and no big departures in free agency as it attempts to build on its 2023 success. Offensively, the Lions may aim to enhance at WR1 as Josh Reynolds reaches free agency, and the guard position is also an issue of concern. The squad could also attempt to enhance its defense by adding a cornerback or pass rusher.

The NFL Draft and free agency will be important for Detroit, but the team may also attempt to make additions through trades. Here are two potential trade targets for the Lions this summer.

Charles Omenihu (DE), Kansas City Chiefs

Aidan Hutchinson had a solid sophomore season, recording 11.5 sacks, 33 quarterback hits, and making his first Pro Bowl appearance. However, as the Lions’ only legitimate pass-rushing danger, opponents frequently neutralized him with double teams. A productive pass-rusher opposite Hutchinson frees up the Michigan product, making this defensive line far more threatening.

Charles Omenihu was a member of the Kansas City Chiefs defense, which finished second in the NFL with 57 sacks in 2023. Omenihu contributed seven sacks and two forced fumbles despite only starting one game. Omenihu, one of four Chiefs players with at least six sacks, is a free agent in 2025. If the Chiefs re-sign Chris Jones, it will leave substantially less money for the team’s other excellent pass-rushers, potentially putting Charles Omenihu accessible in the trade market.

Hunter Renfrow (WR), Las Vegas Raiders

Hunter Renfrow’s worth has dropped significantly since his 1,000-yard season in 2021. He has just 585 receiving yards over the last two years, while missing seven games in 2022. Renfrow remained in place despite trade speculations, but a change of scenery would benefit the slot receiver.

Amon-Ra St. Brown is Detroit’s top wideout, but with Josh Reynolds leaving for free agency, does the team expect Kalif Raymond or Jameson Williams to step up? A consistent underneath threat complements Williams’ ability to spread the field and St. Brown’s talent for getting open on intermediate routes. Renfrow has the potential to be a reliable receiver, but his recent lack of production will keep him accessible at a reasonable price.
