Following a quiet start to the 2018 NFL season, Kansas City Chiefs superstar Travis Kelce has given some insight into his mentality during a frank talk with brother Jason Kelce.
Travis Kelce, the Kansas City Chiefs’ superstar, has stated that he is keeping a level head following a sluggish start to the current NFL season, revealing that he “stopped caring about stats” years ago.
The great tight end has been crucial to his team’s success in recent years, as the Chiefs have won three Super Bowls in five seasons. Alongside quarterback Patrick Mahomes, the 34-year-old is now hoping to lead the team’s assault for an unprecedented “three-peat” this season.
However, Kelce’s start to the season has been somewhat subdued in Kansas City’s first two games against the Baltimore Ravens and the Cincinnati Bengals. The Arrowhead icon had only four catches for 39 yards in his first two games and struggled to make an impression.
In any case, the Chiefs secured back-to-back triumphs in those two games, defeating the Ravens 27-20 and the Bengals 26-25. Kelce has now given an honest assessment of his performance in those two games, as he reviewed the start of the season with his brother Jason Kelce.
The star revealed his perspective, stating that he was maintaining calm at this early stage of the season while still looking for his first touchdown of the year. Speaking about the New Heights, he stated, “There are a lot of factors that must go perfectly for someone to get the ball. It hasn’t gone so well for me in the last two games. That is football, man.
“I am not going to sit here and become frustrated. I used to get really, really […] off and almost lose my cool a lot of the time because I expected that success from myself, and I just like to play the game with such a high level of accountability that it’s difficult for me to deal with being mediocre or having stats that reflect that.
Still, he admitted that he did not pay much attention to statistics, saying, “I stopped caring about stats about four or five years ago and I just went out there and started to just play free and wanted to play for my guys, and sure enough, I think that’s a better mentality.”
Kelce continued, “We’ve got to improve as an offensive. The defense is performing poorly. I put that on myself. I believe it begins with the leaders and with ensuring that you approach the situation with the appropriate mindset. I didn’t play to my full potential. It spreads if you don’t fix it, and I need to have that thing addressed.
Mahomes commented on his teammate’s early season performance, saying, “Obviously, we’ve played two opponents [Ravens, Bengals] and we’ve played a bunch, so they have a strategy for how they’re going to account for Travis.
“But as the season goes on, I mean, he’s going to get his catches, he’s going to get his yards, but the leader he is, what’s special is he’s hyping everybody up, he’s keeping everybody motivated, and that’s what you need out of your great players.”
