Birmingham City could be given the option to sign a player who passed them by during the January transfer window.

Tony Mowbray said that the Blues were’very near’ to signing Ian Poveda, but he ultimately went to Sheffield Wednesday. The 24-year-old had worked with Mowbray at Blackburn Rovers, and a reunion at St Andrew’s was mentioned; however, the Colombian international is currently Birmingham’s relegation opponent.

According to Football Insider, Leeds United will not renew Poveda’s contract. According to the report, he will depart Elland Road on a free transfer after playing his final game for the Whites.

Poveda has appeared seven times for Sheffield Wednesday since joining on February 1, and his only goal contribution to yet was setting up Ike Ugbo for his opening against Birmingham last month. He was absent at the weekend because he was unable to play against his parent club per the conditions of the loan deal.

To date, the winger has made 80 senior football club appearances, beginning with Manchester City and moved to Leeds in 2019. He made 14 Premier League appearances for the Whites and was loaned out to Blackburn Rovers and Blackpool.

Birmingham may consider signing Poveda if he becomes available on a free transfer in the summer. However, if they are to have a chance at recruiting him, they must first maintain their Championship status.

Birmingham lost 1-0 to Middlesbrough, with former loanee Riley McGree scoring the game’s only goal. The match gave the Blues a game advantage over their relegation rivals, and they are currently only one point ahead of Huddersfield Town.

Next up for Birmingham, who have yet to win under interim manager Mark Venus, is Watford, who fired Valerien Ismael on Sunday. The Hornets, who have only won once in ten games, have replaced the former West Brom manager with Tom Cleverley, a former Everton and Manchester United midfielder.
