Town defender knocked out home team with…

During lunchtime today, Australia led by Cameron Burgess defeated Indonesia 4-0 in the Asian Cup round of 16 at the Jassim bin Hamad Stadium in Al Rayyan, Qatar, thanks to an own goal by Elkan Baggott.

Baggott began play and earned his 24th full cap for Indonesia, one of the top three-placed teams that advanced to the second round. However, in the 12th minute, the Town defender gave away an own goal when he misdirected Jackson Irvine’s effort beyond his own goalkeeper.

Burgess was benched the entire time, and Australia scored three more goals, two of them in the final minutes, to guarantee their spot in the round of eight.

At Al-Janoub Stadium in Al-Wakrah on Friday, the Socceroos will take on the victor of Saudi Arabia vs. South Korea, Tuesday’s round of 16 match.

After Baggott’s Indonesian team advanced to the competition’s knockout round for the first time, manager Kieran McKenna will have to decide whether to send the 21-year-old on loan before the transfer window closes at 11 p.m. on Thursday. Baggott will now return to Portman Road.
