Tottenham Hotspur are poised to pounce on Birmingham City’s difficulty

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly rekindling their interest in Birmingham City teenager Rico Browne after he turned down a contract offer from Blues.

According to Football Insider, the North London club has long admired the 20-year-old defender following his apparent rejection of further terms at St Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park.

Birmingham are preparing for their first season in League One since 1995, led by Ange Postecoglou’s former Spurs assistant, the recently promoted Chris Davies.

Given the ambitions of American ownership group Knighthead, led by tycoon Tom Wagner and former NFL icon Tom Brady, a summer of transition in this region of the West Midlands was inevitable.

However, it appears that one of Blues’ Wast Hills academy graduates no longer sees himself as a part of the club’s aspirations to regain momentum despite well-documented ambitions following relegation from the Championship.

Tottenham Hotspur plot fresh move for Birmingham City youngster

According to the most recent report from Football Insider, the defender has turned down the offer of a new contract with the third-tier club, prompting Spurs to re-register their interest in a prior target.

The same publication revealed in 2021 that Browne was given a trial period at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium near the end of Jose Mourinho’s tenure, and after making an impression in a North London Derby youth game against Arsenal, the club failed to pursue him despite making an offer in the face of additional interest from West Ham United and Brighton and Hove Albion.

Despite the aforementioned conjecture, the St Kitts & Nevis youth international went on to earn his first professional contract with Birmingham in the summer of 2022.

Furthermore, the Lilywhites’ interest grew last year as they faced competition from Manchester United, who had impressed while captaining the Second City club’s youth teams.

At the end of the season, the Blues confirmed via its retained list that Browne and Brad Mayo were given professional terms this off-season, with Mayo subsequently signing a new two-year contract.

However, the ambiguity around Browne’s future persists, prompting another swoop from Tottenham and Brighton.

Rico Browne’s 2023/24 campaign

Despite being highly acclaimed for his youth football abilities, Browne has yet to earn a senior appearance for Birmingham.

Blues’ youth system has gained recognition in recent years, with many young players aiming to follow in the footsteps of past graduate, current England and Real Madrid phenom Jude Bellingham.

Browne made 14 appearances for Steve Spooner’s U21 team in the first half of last season before being loaned out to Rushall Olympic of the National League North.

After making the temporary transition to Dales Lane last December, the defender made 18 appearances for the Pics, helping them survive their maiden season in the sixth division.

He scored once for the Pics, in a surprise 1-0 away victory against Chester, and assisted against Curzon Ashton and Boston United.

Birmingham City shouldn’t be overly concerned by Rico Browne snub

While it is evident that Browne has the potential to become a valuable player, fans should not be excessively alarmed by these recent developments.

It would be fantastic to see another rising player break into the first squad under Davies’ supervision, but given the club’s previous transfer market ambition, Blues fans’ attention has shifted elsewhere.

Blues have been linked with defenders with significantly more experience in the game, such as Rangers’ Connor Goldson, in recent days, highlighting the club’s current advantage over many of their League One competitors.
