Top landing locations for former All-Pro cornerback

Several high-profile free agents are still available on the market, but none may be more prominent than cornerback Stephon Gilmore, the 2019 NFL Defensive Player of the Year.

Gilmore is coming off another solid season in 2023, when he recorded 68 tackles, one forced fumble, two interceptions, and 13 passes defensed for the Cowboys.

With plenty of fine football left in him, these are the top three possible destinations for the 33-year-old.

New England Patriots

Gilmore’s best seasons of his 12-year NFL career came with the Patriots from 2017 to 2020, and he may chose to retire with them. According to Dakota Randall of the Pro Football Network, Gilmore is open to reuniting with New England.

The Patriots are currently not a contending team, which may discourage Gilmore from joining them. If not, they would certainly welcome a reunion with him so that he could share his knowledge with young cornerback Christian Gonzalez, New England’s first-round choice in 2023.

Dallas Cowboys

Gilmore has indicated interest in returning to the team at the Super Bowl, so a return to Dallas is not ruled out.

“I want to come back,” Gilmore stated. “We can’t speak till March. But that’s the aim because I believe we have the elements to reach where we want to go, and I want to be a part of it.

However, the Cowboys’ main challenge is salary cap room, since they only have roughly $5.5 million in money, according to Over The Cap.

According to Spotrac, Gilmore is anticipated to earn more than $11 million for the 2024 season. So Dallas has some work to do if it wants the five-time Pro Bowler back next season.

Indianapolis Colts

A third reunion? Why not.

Gilmore spent the 2022 season with the Colts, who traded him to the Cowboys a season later. But Indianapolis may need to call its old friend for more cornerback help in 2024.

The Colts were able to re-sign former Pro Bowl CB Kenny Moore II this offseason, but he has primarily played the slot cornerback role for them. Gilmore would provide some much-needed veteran experience on the outside.

Plus, they have plenty of cap space — $22.4 million per Over The Cap.
