Tony Mowbray wants Ex Celtic man in Birmingham City

John Park, a former Celtic scout, has apparently joined Birmingham City.

The talent scout, who left a position at Ibrox last year, is rumored to have joined Tony Mowbray’s Blues, who were recently acquired by Knighthead Capital and Tom Wagner. After assuming control earlier in the season, the Americans fired John Eustace, recruited and fired Wayne Rooney, and then looked to Mowbray, a former Celtic manager, to improve their league performance.

Park has reportedly been given a position at Birmingham City, according to Football Scotland. The team wants to go through the Championship before getting promoted to the Premier League.

Under Neil Lennon, the 65-year-old played a crucial role in Celtic’s recruitment efforts, helping the team sign players like Victor Wanyama and Virgil Van Dijk.

In July 2022, Park became a member of the Ibrox club alongside Ross Wilson and Giovanni van Bronkhorst. But after they departed, Park played a significant role in backing Michael Beale’s poor hiring practices in the summer, which resulted in the Englishman losing his position.

In the past, Park has also played for Blackburn Rovers, Vancouver Whitecaps, Maccabi Tel Aviv, Motherwell, Hibs, Dundee United, and Legia Warsaw.

Park hails from a bygone era of scouting that heavily relies on having a “eye for a player.” The focus of recruiting now includes a variety of criteria, including numbers, all of which are intended to help a player succeed in the role and system that the team uses.
