Tom Brady made a confidential statement about Birmingham City despite relegation struggle

Tom Brady, the seven-time Super Bowl champion, is used to on-field success in sports, but his Birmingham City have struggled in the 2023/24 season and are firmly in a relegation battle.

Tom Brady ‘loves’ working with Birmingham City as the Blues try to avoid relegation from the Championship, according to NFL veteran and Burnley owner JJ Watt.

Brady stated in August, on his 46th birthday, that he had acquired a minority investment in Birmingham City, and the team began the season well under previous coach John Eustace. The renowned former quarterback was present for the first home game of the 2023/24 season, a 1-0 victory over Leeds.

However, Birmingham suddenly fired Eustace in favor of signing Wayne Rooney after he left Major League Soccer’s DC United. Rooney suffered greatly, leaving after the club fell down the league table, and some fans blamed the high-profile ownership, notably Brady, for the unneeded coaching changes.

Birmingham are now 23rd in the Championship, despite investment from ownership company Knighthead. Gary Rowett’s side suffered their 22nd league defeat of the season at home to Cardiff City, leaving them one point from safety with four games remaining.

Brady is no stranger to adversity, but he is clearly more accustomed to success in professional sports. But he is not the only former NFL player in a relegation struggle, with Watt’s Burnley struggling in the Premier League.

And Watt revealed that the pair have discussed their fortunes together, with Brady privately admitting that he enjoys being part despite Birmingham’s on-field struggles.

“We [J.J. and Tom Brady] spoke this week about [his investment in Birmingham City] because they are trying to get out [of the relegation zone], so we’re both in a similar situation in different leagues right now,” Watt stated on the Sky Bet-sponsored Stick to Football podcast.

“I know he’s working with them on the training and some of the physical things since that’s also where his business comes from. “We both love it.”

Birmingham City’s troubles on the pitch come after Knighthead manager Tom Wagner announced plans to develop a new stadium, training ground, and academy facilities in the near future. He expected the project to be completed within five years, but his team is facing the more immediate problem of relegation.

Wagner has expressed his intention to use Brady’s experience to help Blues players enhance their performance and conditioning. The seven-time Super Bowl champion currently serves as chairman of an advisory board at St Andrew’s.

“We have had long conversations about what the infrastructure can do to benefit player performance and I’m not going to get into Tom’s trade secrets but he has a lot of views on how to use that as a significant competitive advantage in a pursuit of excellence on the pitch,” Wagner said in a statement. “Listening to his statements, they truly resonate, and he has given a lot of consideration to how we can build that infrastructure to support the players.

“The hope and objective is for Birmingham City players to come and extend their careers and play for a long time, since we will help them do so using the same procedures Tom employed during his career. “What he did was unprecedented, but it is not impossible to replicate.”
