Titans Free Agents: Arguments for and against re-signing Derrick Henry

NASHVILLE — Running back Derrick Henry is a pending free agent. Should the Tennessee Titans re-sign him or let him go? First, here are some of Henry’s career highlights in eight seasons with the Titans:

No, let him go. Henry turned 30 in January, which is often an inflection point for NFL running backs. He has already noticed a modest drop in performance.

Can the Titans count on him for 250 touches again after 2,000+ carries in his career? Pro Football Focus, a sports analytics firm, predicts Henry could get a two-year contract for $10 million per year.

While the Titans have almost $65 million in salary cap room, shouldn’t they invest in offensive linemen and wide receivers to give second-year quarterback Will Levis the best chance of success?

Tyjae Spears appears to be a capable replacement to Henry. Find him a partner to decrease wear and tear, reward Derrick Henry for his service, and let him join a contender like the Baltimore Ravens.

YES. MAKE HIM A TITAN FOREVER!

Despite some regression by his lofty standards, Henry finished second in the league in rushing yards (1,167) and was chosen for his fourth Pro Bowl. He scored twelve touchdowns.

In 2023, Henry averaged 3.32 yards after contact, which is nearly comparable to Christian McCaffrey, the NFL’s best running back. According to Pro Football Focus, Henry had an overall grade of 90.2, trailing only McCaffrey.

Derrick Henry still adores Tennessee. At the Pro Bowl, he told tennesseetitans.com, “I’ve been a Tennessee Titan my entire career.”

Tennessee has always been my home. I adore the fans. This is my first time being a free agent, so we’ll see what happens. And I will leave everything else to God.” C’mon, Derrick Henry should be a Titan forever.
