Three Potential Replacements for Pete Carroll as Seattle Seahawks Head Coach

The Tennessee Titans fired Mike Vrabel yesterday, the first major surprise of the young NFL offseason.

Today, we were greeted with another unexpected story, this time from Adam Schefter, who revealed that Pete Carroll will no longer be on the sidelines of the Seattle Seahawks. He was not fired, nor is he retiring, but he will not be the Seahawks’ head coach next season.

It will be intriguing to see how this happened, but the Seahawks have some thinking out to do in the meantime. They are without a head coach for the first time since 2010, and it is a difficult moment to enter the head coach search because there is so much competition. In addition to the Seahawks and Titans, the Los Angeles Chargers, Las Vegas Raiders, Carolina Panthers, Atlanta Falcons, and Washington Commanders are all looking for a new head coach. The New England Patriots could soon join that group.

To get their man, the Seahawks will have to act quickly. So, who might be faced with filling Carroll’s shoes in Seattle? Here are a few suggestions.

Dan Quinn

The Seahawks were linked to Quinn shortly after Carroll’s departure, which makes sense. Quinn gained to prominence as the defensive coordinator for the Legion of Boom, and he also has head coaching experience, having led the Atlanta Falcons to their second Super Bowl participation. Of course, Quinn is also the first person in Super Bowl history to blow a 25-point lead.

He’s been rehabilitating his reputation as Dallas’ defensive coordinator and appears poised to take the helm again after interviewing for various positions last summer. Given the familiarity of ownership and the defensive background Quinn shares with Carroll, he should be regarded the clear frontrunner.

Mike Vrabel

Despite Quinn’s advantages, the Seahawks would be negligent if they did not consider Vrabel. He is currently the top coaching candidate on the market, a trend-setting coach who was fired due to a power struggle more than any true failure of his coaching. Sure, Vrabel isn’t flawless; his defense struggled at times, and his squad appeared to be confused offensively after Arthur Smith was hired away. He still has the greatest credentials of any coach available, and his phone will never stop ringing until he is employed again. Seattle will undoubtedly be one of those clubs on the phone.

Aaron Glenn

Despite Quinn’s benefits, the Seahawks would be unwise not to consider Vrabel. He is currently the top coaching candidate on the market, a trend-setting coach who was fired due to a power struggle more than any genuine failure of his coaching. Sure, Vrabel isn’t flawless; the defense struggled under his coaching at times, and his club appeared to be confused offensively after Arthur Smith was hired away. He still has the finest credentials of any coach available, and his phone will be ringing nonstop until he is employed again. Seattle will undoubtedly be one of the teams calling.
