This dude has a great opportunity of breaking a Seahawks rookie record

Is Joey Galloway’s record for rookie receptions with the Seahawks in jeopardy?

Wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba of the Seattle Seahawks, a rookie, saw a lot of the ball against the Dallas Cowboys, hauling in a team-high seven passes for 62 yards on 11 targets. If the NFL would have been more consistent in defining “control” and its catch regulations, it may have been eight catches for ninety-two yards and a score.

JSN has now hauled in 45 passes for 468 yards and two scores. Despite a poor start, the No. 20 overall choice has been among the NFL’s most productive rookie receivers, even with DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett ahead of him in the depth chart.

Smith-Njigba is likely to set a new rookie record for the Seahawks with five games remaining in the regular season and an increased workload.

All-Time Seahawks Rookie Receptions

Joey Galloway (1995) – 67
DK Metcalf (2019) – 58
Steve Largent (1976) – 54
Darrell Jackson (2000) – 53
Doug Baldwin (2011) – 51
Tyler Lockett (2015) – 51

Jaxon Smith-Njigba (2023) – 45

Naturally, Smith-Njigba might require all 17 games to reach Joey Galloway, but since Largent is surrounded only by players who have played 16 games, these footnotes will continue until the NFL introduces a 24-game regular season in 2046.

On this list, JSN has the potential to at least overtake the three best receivers from the Pete Carroll era: Metcalf, Baldwin, and Lockett.

It hasn’t been an easy rookie year for JSN due to preseason injuries, a couple in-season drops, and misunderstandings, but in the last few weeks, he has demonstrated why the Seahawks were keen to select him. I wouldn’t be surprised if he was the team’s second- or even first-choice target leader by the following season.
