The return of the former Yankees coach to New York is “under consideration.”

Phil Nevin might return to New York in the near future, but he might live in a different borough.

Nevin is being considered for the position of bench coach with the Mets, according to Mike Puma of the New York Post.

For incoming Mets manager Carlos Mendoza, this is a known prospect because the two were teammates with the Yankees from 2018 to 2021 when Nevin was the Bronx’s third base coach.

Nevin is also a strong contender for the manager position with the Padres. Earlier this month, Nevin was formally interviewed by San Diego for the available post, which resulted from Bob Melvin’s departure to manage the San Francisco Giants.

Following the 2021 season, Nevin was hired as third base coach by the Angels when the Yankees declined to extend his contract. After Joe Maddon was fired during his first season with Los Angeles, he was named interim manager. Nevin was welcomed back by the Angels in 2023 for a one-year contract; however, he did not receive a new deal following his 73-89 record this season.

Prior to the Mets’ 2023 season finale against the Phillies, Buck Showalter declared he would not be managing the team in 2024. Mendoza was hired by the Mets and their new president of baseball operations, David Stearns, to take over the post.
