The quarterback for Ohio State says he’s ready for another fight

Devin Brown, the quarterback for Ohio State football, likes to use cryptic social media posts to clarify his position when rumors start to swirl.

A year ago, Brown shared a scene from the 1998 movie Rounders, in which the lead played by Matt Damon tells the mobbed-up villain played by John Malkovich, “I’m not going anywhere.” The message was clear: Brown intended to stay and challenge Kyle McCord for the starting job, as he was reportedly approached by programs interested in accepting him as a transfer.

After one season as a starter, McCord won that competition, but on Monday he made his transfer through the portal. As rumors circulate that Ohio State will take his place via the portal, Brown once more allowed an image to speak for itself.

He used a post from X.com that featured just ships burning on the water in this instance.This seems to be a reference to the legend of the 16th-century explorer Hernan Cortes, who burned his ships to show his men they could not turn back after discovering the new world.

If so, Brown might be indicating that he intends to stay for another opportunity to establish himself in the spring by doing this.

The rivalry between McCord and the team continued at the beginning of the regular season. However, McCord has always had a higher percentage of game snaps—either in quantity or quality. Before Week 3, McCord was designated as the full-time starter. In the end, he quarterbacked a goal-line package that OSU unveiled around the middle of the season, but that also resulted in an ankle injury that cost him playing time in the final stretch.

Day stated several times that he thought Brown had passed McCord at one point during the preseason. However, some of the rough edges visible in open practices and scrimmages prevented him from maintaining that advantage. He was not as good as McCord at everything and was more prone to errors, so he had not honed his abilities enough to seize the chance.

Regardless of the other quarterbacks on the team in four months, he might be in a better position to close out the game strong. If our interpretation of that post is accurate, he seems to be stuck in his ways.
