The Points Needed By Birmingham City And Two Others To Secure Championship Place

The Championship relegation race is heating up, with numerous teams battling to avoid the drop.

Birmingham City is currently in a Championship relegation battle with several other teams in the division.

We’re nearing the end of the 2023/24 season, and despite the positive atmosphere created by Tom Wagner’s takeover, the team is struggling at the bottom of the table. They were in the play-offs in the first quarter of the season, but after the Wayne Rooney experiment failed, they are now battling for second-tier status.

Following Tuesday night’s draw with play-off-chasing Hull City, the Blues are now one point clear of the relegation zone. Stoke City lost at Leeds United, and they, along with QPR and Huddersfield, have 38 points. The league is extremely tight, with only two points separating 23rd-placed Sheffield Wednesday and 16th-placed Plymouth Argyle.

It begs the question of what might be required to maintain your league status this season. We’re looking back over the last decade to determine if more points are required to keep up this term. Here are our findings.

Reading had the lowest number of points required to survive in the 2021/22 season, with 41. They finished four points ahead of Peterborough United, despite being penalized six points for violating profit and sustainability criteria. Nottingham Forest’s total of 51 points is the highest that a club in 21st place has finished with and survived. They finished ahead of Blackburn Rovers on goal difference, winning by two.

For the past decade, teams have needed an average of 46 points to maintain their second-tier status. Birmingham presently has 39 points and 33 points to play for, with games in hand over the bottom three teams.

Birmingham’s next encounter is against Millwall at The Den, which might give them an advantage over one of the other teams in the mix. All of Birmingham’s fixtures against clubs below them, such as QPR, Rotherham United, and Huddersfield Town, are away from home, which is concerning given that they have not won in their previous five away league games.
