“The only concern”: Birmingham City cautioned against one aspect in Plymouth Argyle’s chase

Despite being demoted from the Championship to League One, Birmingham City are demonstrating some ambition in the transfer market as they aim to rebuild under Chris Davies.

The Blues have lately been linked with a deal for Plymouth Argyle defender Dan Scarr, according to Football Insider, with the club apparently looking for a centre-back this summer.

The 29-year-old spent two years with St Andrew’s after coming from Stourbridge, but failed to make a first-team breakthrough, making only one appearance. He spent the 2017/18 season on loan at Wycombe Wanderers before joining Walsall in January 2019.

Scarr, on the other hand, has restarted his career since leaving Birmingham, spending the previous three seasons at Plymouth Argyle, where he helped the club win the League One title in 2023.

Dan Scarr deemed a good signing providing Birmingham City don’t overpay

Our Birmingham City fan pundit, Mike Gibbs, believes Scarr would be an excellent addition to Birmingham’s squad this summer, but has encouraged his club to only agree to a deal for the defender if the price is right.

Mike told Football League World: “I believe Dan Scarr would be an excellent purchase.

“He was obviously here as a youth player. We brought him in from Stourbridge, and he never really played, but seemed to do really well with our youth teams.

“I think he would be great at this level. He obviously got promoted with Plymouth the year before last, he played frequently last year, and he’s still a relatively good age for a centre-half.

“I think the only concern for me is the fee, and how much would that fee have to be? I think if the fee was in the realms of half a million, then I think it would be a good acquisition, but if it was anything more, it would be a little bit more concerning to be brutally honest.

“Fee aside though I think he would be a really great addition.”

Dan Scarr would be a good signing for Birmingham City

Scarr has clearly progressed as a player since leaving St Andrew’s five and a half years ago, and he will feel as if he has unfinished business with the club.

Scarr, a Birmingham native, may appreciate the opportunity to return to the club that gave him his professional football debut, and he might bring plenty of League One experience and nous.

The 29-year-old also gained Championship experience during the 2023/24 season, appearing 28 times, so if the Blues win promotion, which is undoubtedly the goal, he’ll be ready to play in the second tier.

Concerns about Scarr’s prospective transfer fee are fair, but with only one year left on his contract at Home Park, you’d think a move for the defender wouldn’t be prohibitively expensive.

The 29-year-old is seasoned, has something to prove, and has a League One title-winning season on his resume, so it’s a deal worth considering for Birmingham City.
