The lions  Brad Holmes is unlikely to use the franchise tag

Could the Lions elect not to utilize the franchise tag again?

The Detroit Lions are not anticipated to apply the franchise tag when the window opens on Tuesday.

Detroit general manager Brad Holmes is facing a lot of major decisions regarding players who will become free agents, but he is unlikely to designate a single player with the franchise tag. The Detroit Free Press stated that the Lions are unlikely to deploy the tag this offseason.

Graham Glasgow and Jonah Jackson, two offensive line starters, were among the prospective candidates.

two lineman, Glasgow is likely the better deserving of the franchise tag. The 31-year-old is coming off the greatest Pro Football Focus-graded season of his career (75.1 overall and 82.1 run-blocking rating). Meanwhile, he played three separate positions for the first time in his NFL career (left guard, center, and right guard).

According to OverTheCap, the expected compensation for deploying the tag on an offensive lineman is $21.72 million. That number far exceeds each player’s 2023 pay.

Detroit has not used the franchise tag since 2018, when it did so with former defensive end Ziggy Ansah. Teams have until March 5 to apply the franchise or transition tag to players inside their organization.
