The Rams must submit their 25-man roster to the EFL now that the transfer window has closed.

Now that the transfer window has closed, Derby County must register their 25-man roster with the Football League.

And, following a productive summer in which 11 players were signed, Derby have plenty of options as they attempt to survive their first season back in the second tier.

But what are the rules for registering squads? DerbyshireLive looks into what makes homegrown players, who is considered club-developed, and more.

What are the rules?

Championship clubs can have squads of up to 25 players, eight of which need to be homegrown.

You are allowed an unlimited amount of under-21s on permanent deals without them being registered. However, this is not the case with loan players who must be registered with the EFL even if they are under 21.

Once the window closes, clubs must also ensure there is at least one player who has been club-developed in the squad. You can also have as many loan players as you want but only five can be named in any matchday squad. But head coach Paul Warne is fine in that respect given David Ozoh, Tawanda Chirewa, Jerry Yates, Nat Phillips and Marcus Harness are the only loan players at the club.

What qualifies as homegrown and club-developed?

Homegrown players can be any nationality but to qualify means they have to have been registered with any club in England or Wales for at least three seasons before their 21st birthday.

Derby tick plenty of those boxes with players like Josh Vickers, Kane Wilson, Eiran Cashin, Tom Barkhuizen, Liam Thompson, Curtis Nelson, Sonny Bradley, James Collins etc.

For a club-developed player, it means somebody who was at the club for at least a year before his last season with the under-19s. Dajaune Brown and Darren Robinson fall into this category.

Where do Derby stand?

Derby have 29 players on their books, but three of those will count as under-21s in Jake Rooney, Darren Robinson (currently on loan at Hartlepool) and Dajaune Brown.

That takes the number down to 26 players, but before anybody starts panicking about an outfield player being omitted to make it 25, there is no need to worry.

There is a rule regarding goalkeepers that is important. Rohan Luthra does not need to be registered even though he is third-choice.

He is unlikely to play this season and would only be required if there is a crisis and a goalkeeper is unavailable through injury. Clubs in the Championship can apply to register goalkeepers should that scenario occur.
