The career of a neglected Everton player must ask Dyche to let him leave in January

Ben Godfrey, a defender for Everton, has quickly lost his significance at Goodison Park and may ask Sean Dyche for permission to go permanently in January.

The York-born dynamo, who had previously shone for his previous employers Norwich City, both in the second division and in the Premier League, seemed to be a worthy capture at the time of his arrival back in 2020 when he was bought by Carlo Ancelotti.

Godfrey joined James Rodriguez and Abdoulaye Doucoure in being acquired at Goodison Park during that summer transfer window, commanding a rather sizable fee of £20 million.

Since then, the former Canaries defender has gone on to make 79 appearances on the blue half of Merseyside since his capture in 2020, severely hampered by injury troubles and lack of consistency in the Toffees first team.

It’s really sad to see a player with Godfrey’s skill fall so gracefully in such a short period of time, and that was undoubtedly caused by a lack of opportunities and confidence.

Given his decline in importance and the fact that he only has two years left on his present contract with Merseyside, there were even rumors over the summer (The Times, 1 June) that Dyche and company would be willing to allow the former Shrewsbury Town loanee leave.

Conor Coady, Yerry Mina, and Mason Holgate all left the team, but Godfrey ultimately stayed put. However, this season, the £4 million man has been relegated to the sidelines as Jarrad Branthwaite has earned a spot as a regular in the squad.

It’s now extremely questionable when Godfrey will make another appearance under Dyche’s guidance, even if Everton does sustain an injury to one of James Tarkowski or Branthwaite. Godfrey has only played in two games this season.

Dyche will always favor Michael Keane’s services over Godfrey, further demonstrating how the 25-year-old is now a forgotten player at Goodison Park.

It won’t be shocking to see Godfrey implore Dyche to allow him depart during the January window given that he will soon be entering the most crucial years of his professional life. It’s possibly the smartest choice he can make for his sputtering career right now.
