Surprising QB Picked to Pro Bowl as Backup

An extremely surprising player has been named to the Pro Bowl.

On Tuesday, the NFL named Indianapolis Colts quarterback Gardner Minshew to the Pro Bowl.

Minshew is the 11th quarterback named to the Pro Bowl for the 2023 season.

The original six quarterbacks named to the Pro Bowl were Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson, and Tua Tagovailoa from the AFC, and Dak Prescott, Brock Purdy, and Matthew Stafford from the NFC. Tagovailoa is the only one of the original six quarterbacks that will compete in the Orlando Pro Bowl.

C.J. Stroud and Minshew will join Tagovailoa to represent the AFC. The quarterbacks for the NFC will be Jalen Hurts, Geno Smith, and Baker Mayfield.

Minshew’s selection to the Pro Bowl will make everyone do a double take. He started the season as Anthony Richardson’s backup after serving as the Philadelphia Eagles’ backup quarterback for two seasons. Minshew performed admirably after replacing Richardson as Indiana’s starter. He threw for 3,305 yards, 15 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. He also carried 100 yards and scored three touchdowns. Indy finished 7-6 in his starts and 9-8 overall. Although all of those stats and Indy’s record after Richardson’s injury were very respectable, nothing about them screamed “Pro Bowl season.”
