Striker extends contract despite Sunderland and Ipswich transfer links

News from around the Championship involving some of Sunderland’s league opponents.

Sunderland are still looking for a new head coach, while their Championship opponents prepare for the upcoming season.

Here are some of the headlines for second-tier clubs, with retained lists still being announced and head coach positions to fill.

Striker’s contract extended

Sunderland were seeking for a new striker in January, and one of the names discussed was Blackburn’s Sam Gallagher. Ipswich were also said to be interested in the 28-year-old, who missed much of the 2023/24 season owing to injuries.

Blackburn have now announced that Gallagher and Tyrhys Dolan’s contracts have one-year options activated. Rovers are also in talks with defender Kyle McFadzean and midfielder John Fleck, who signed short-term contracts at Ewood Park until the end of the season in January.

Wagner reacts to Norwich sacking

Sunderland isn’t the only club looking for a new head coach, as Norwich fired David Wagner following the Canaries’ play-off loss to Leeds, and assistant coach Christoph Buhler also left Carrow Road.

Wagner stated in a statement released by the League Managers Association: “It was a fantastic opportunity to return to English football and manage a club with such a rich history and people. I’ve enjoyed my time in Norfolk, getting to know the locals and everyone who supports the club.

“When Christoph and I arrived, we were confident that we could help the club compete for promotion, and while we are disappointed by the nature of the result against Leeds, we are also very proud of everyone at Norwich City’s hard work this season to reach the play-off semi-finals in such a competitive league.”

“Although I am disappointed to be leaving a club with so much potential, I respect that the club has decided to move in a different direction without Christoph and me.”

Ex-Sunderland players released

Derby County has also announced their retained list, as the Rams prepare to return to the Championship.

Along with former Sunderland players Martyn Waghorn and Conor Hourihane, who came through the ranks on Wearside but never made a senior appearance, Derby have confirmed that Dwight Gayle and Korey Smith, as well as goalkeepers Scott Loach and Joe Wildsmith, will leave the club this summer when their contracts expire.
