Steelers Divided on Starting Quarterback

The Pittsburgh Steelers are divided about which option is best.

Pittsburgh — The Pittsburgh Steelers are deciding how to approach the quarterback position, with Kenny Pickett expected to compete with another veteran for the starting job. However, indications indicate that there is some internal disagreement over how they should handle the problem.

Head coach Mike Tomlin and Steelers President Art Rooney II have both stated publicly that re-signing Mason Rudolph is their top priority. And that they want the former third-round pick to be the veteran dueling with Pickett this summer.

According to Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, there is some disagreement within the organization regarding whether Pickett or Rudolph should be considered the starting quarterback for the 2017 season.

“There appears to be some internal division that maybe Mason Rudolph should be the starter after the way he finished the 2023 season, winning the final three regular season games to gain entry to the playoffs,” the writer says.

Rudolph hasn’t ruled out returning to Pittsburgh, but rumors say he’s expected to receive higher offers elsewhere. If he decides the Steelers are his best match, he’ll most likely return for another season. That may all be chosen based on the team’s perception of Pickett.

Rudolph has an 8-4-1 record as a starter, while Pickett is 14-10. If both return for the 2024 season, it might be a close race to see who wins the job in Week 1.
