Star’s transfer in doubt after Birmingham City rivals make key decision

Lyle Taylor’s situation at Sheffield Wednesday

Former Birmingham City striker Lyle Taylor has stopped training with their Championship rivals Sheffield Wednesday.

Taylor, 33, spent two weeks training with Wednesday in a bid to earn a contract. However, Xisco Munoz confirmed Taylor was no longer with the Owls after their 1-0 defeat to West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns on Tuesday.

“No, he is not training with us, and we need to think about the situation,” Munoz explained. “We will see what happens. We need to find exactly what we want. I don’t know exactly if he is what we want or what we need. We need more time – we have had a lot of games in this period.

“I know he is a very good player but we will see what happens in the next few days. We will then make a decision. We have a big problem thinking how we can improve the team in the short term, not just two, three or four weeks.”

Munoz has since become the first Championship managerial casualty of the season. The Spaniard was sacked by Wednesday after failing to record a victory in their opening 10 Championship games, leaving Taylor’s future even more unclear. The striker hasn’t played a competitive game at club level since his loan spell at Blues expired in May 2022. Taylor didn’t play at all in the final year of his contract at Nottingham Forest.
