Star urges team to ‘set things right’

Adam Armstrong wants the Saints to “put things right” against Championship leaders Ipswich on Monday.

Southampton head to Portman Road two days after their 1-1 draw with Middlesbrough on Friday, which meant they missed out on taking benefit of Leicester and Leeds’ drop of points.

When the two sides met earlier this season at St Mary’s, Ipswich won by a slender 1-0 margin, which Armstrong felt hurt the squad.

Russell Martin’s team could close the deficit on the Tractor Boys to seven points with a win while still having two games in hand.

“We know where they are in the table and how well they have done this year,” Armstrong told the Daily Echo.

“They are top of the table after moving up from League One last season, which is an outstanding feat.

“We have to go there, be ourselves, and make things right.” They all were saddened by their earlier season defeat.

“When you lose four games in a row, they all hurt equally. We must ensure that we have completed the necessary job before going there to work a shift.”

The trip to Ipswich is Southampton’s first of eight games in April, during which squad depth and focus will be critical.

Boro’s equaliser on Friday came in the 90th minute, causing irritation among fans, players, and coaches alike.

The south coast side cannot afford any more moments like that if they are to secure the final automatic promotion berth.

“If we’re not putting them away, we need to be solid at the back,” Armstrong said. “If you switch off for a minute in this league, you will be punished. It is the same in the Premier League.

“It’s something we should definitely improve on. We have the depth. Everyone is taking off one another. We need to keep that up since there are so many games in such a short period of time.
