“So much negativity”: Birmingham City urged to make huge transfers this summer
|Birmingham City fan pundit feels the team should take relegation to League One as an opportunity to start over in order to rebound at the first attempt.
It’s been a difficult year for Blues, but fans were expecting for a prosperous new era when Tom Wagner bought the club from the BSHL last year.
However, his first 12 months in charge have not gone as planned, as the new leadership made some bold measures that backfired, most notably replacing John Eustace with Wayne Rooney.
Despite a final-day triumph over Norwich City, the Blues’ terrible season ended with relegation.
Birmingham City preparing for life in League One
Even with relegation, Blues fans remain optimistic about Wagner’s future, as the club has already announced plans to build a great new stadium, and the owner has stated that he wants to return the team to the Premier League.
That seems a long way off now, and the primary focus is on constructing a team capable of returning to the Championship immediately.
And, speaking with FLW, Blues supporter Mike highlighted how he hopes to see a dramatic revamp at St. Andrew’s in the coming weeks, with new players brought in to transform the group’s mentality.
“I think we’ve got to get rid of the deadwood. We have to get rid of the players that haven’t performed. Over the years, as we’ve transitioned from manager to manager, or in this case a different league, we’ve always retained the same players, that just aren’t keeping with what the next manager needs to do.
“We’ve got to cut the cord and start again. We need to have a positive mentality, there’s been so much negativity around the club, and you need that fresh break to create a positive mindset going forward, which will be really, really important.”
Birmingham City set for huge summer
Relegation was a significant blow to the club, but, as previously stated, it can be a chance for a fresh start, and after years of underachieving, it could be exactly what the Blues need.
First, they will hope for more clarification on the managerial situation, as it is unclear who will be in charge for the start of the new season in August.
In any case, there will be a lot of transfer business, and the reality is that there aren’t many players who Blues fans will be concerned about keeping, especially among the squad’s senior leaders.
This appears to be a huge opportunity for Blues to develop a new squad, and it will be about instilling a feeling of solidarity in the fans so that the club can kick on and have a successful period.
They must strike the correct mix, however, because it is critical that they do not become stuck in League One for years, thus acquiring players who can make an immediate impact is also important.
So, a major summer beckons, and those in charge at Birmingham must get it right.
