Sherrone Moore expresses confidence on new coach

Sherrone Moore sounds confident Tress can continue Herbert’s approach to strength and conditioning.

Following Ben Herbert’s acquisition to the Los Angeles Chargers under Jim Harbaugh, Justin Tress, the new strength and conditioning coach at Michigan, will have huge shoes to fill. But in Tress, Michigan is getting someone who has studied under Herbert since he enrolled in the program in 2018. In the realm of strength and conditioning, Herbert is regarded as the best, thus the Wolverines are hoping that Tress’s prolonged presence will benefit Herbert.

Tress worked for Herbert at Arkansas for two years before coming to Michigan, so his relationship with Herbert predates Michigan. Tress was also a member of Alabama’s strength and conditioning staff during the national championship victories in 2015 and 2016, when the Crimson Tide finished second.

Tress’s contributions to the program were discussed by incoming Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore in an interview on the Pat McAfee Show.

“We believe that Justin Tress, the person we elevated, will do an amazing job,” Moore stated. “He’s spent the entire time by Ben Herbert’s side. He spent time there as well as at Alabama. He has had the opportunity to see excellent strength coaches. We are quite thrilled that Justin Tress will be heading up the strength program.

Moore described the strength staff as a whole as “awesome,” adding that they all travel together, wear black, and if you see one, you see the other four.

Tress still has a lot to show, but both Moore and Herbert are giving him resounding endorsements.

“I’ve worked closely with Coach Tress since 2017 and have known him since 2014,” Herbert remarked. “I’ve worked side by side with Justin for the past seven years, through the best points and the lowest points. His dedication to me or to Michigan Football waiver has never once occurred to me. Justin is a fantastic example of intelligence, reliability, and dedication. He will undoubtedly carry on the tradition we have created with Michigan Football, I have no doubt about that.
