Shane Steichen Not Part of the Competition for Awards

Shane Steichen, the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts, was not the front-runner for the NFL’s best coach award.

The Indianapolis Colts entered 2023 with a new mindset and a changed mentality following their disastrous campaign the year before. The fact that the team was revitalized by new head coach Shane Steichen contributed significantly to its feeling of freshness.

Even though Steichen’s debut season was marred by a number of problems after Indianapolis, he managed to eke out an excellent 9-8 record—many had predicted five or six wins. Additionally, quarterback Anthony Richardson was not present. With a QB-savvy coach like Steichen as his mentor, the Florida product might be ready to overachieve despite being a rookie with a lot to get used to.

Names like Shanahan and Stefanski are less credible, while names like Ryans, Campbell, and Harbaugh stand out as worthy.

One of the NFL’s most complete rosters was that of Shanahan’s 49ers. In addition, players who played almost the whole season included defensive end Nick Bosa (17 games), tight end George Kittle (16 games), wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk (16 games), quarterback Brock Purdy (16 games), and running back Christian McCaffrey (16 games).

Not that Shanahan is not a capable coach—he is among the finest in the league. However, he also has access to a top-tier roster, with the main players being nearly completely healthy.In addition, the 49ers’ offensive and defensive lines are ridiculously strong.

In comparison to Shanahan, Browns coach Stefanski is more prone to disagreement.

Early in the season, Stefanski lost quarterback Deshaun Watson and vicious running back Nick Chubb. However, Stefanski’s brutalizing defense and his extremely effective offensive line—despite his injuries—do not support him as a finalist. Cleveland fielded a superb defense for several weeks, led by star cornerback Denzel Ward and world-class defensive pass-rusher Myles Garrett (who finished with 14 sacks).

Indeed, with Joe Flacco at quarterback, they advanced to the postseason. Despite the injuries, this was still a deeper and better roster.

It is difficult to argue against any of these five coaches, but considering the circumstances surrounding the whole group he worked with in his first season, it seems a bit extreme that Steichen is not a finalist. In the unlikely event that the Colts defeat the Texans in Week 18 and win the AFC South, Steichen would probably replace Shanahan or Stefanski as a finalist.

The Detroit Lions struggled as a club for decades until Campbell’s electrifying style blessed the city and the team, thus he is sure to win.

With so many teams dealing with injuries, this was a year where coaches in the league had to make a lot out of little. This is particularly valid for the quarterback position, which is the most crucial in the game.

However, Steichen accomplished this with one of the youngest and greenest rosters in the NFL, all while working under the direction of brand-new coaches and without key players for several weeks, such as tight end Jelani Woods and running back Jonathan Taylor, or for the entire 2023 season in some cases, such as Richardson.

Looking ahead to the second season, Steichen anticipates improved health for every player on the squad. Given that they will still be among the league’s younger clubs, this will enable Indianapolis to reach its full potential.
