Sean Payton ‘loves’ J.J. McCarthy and intends to sign the Michigan QB to the Broncos as he attempts to locate Russell Wilson’s replacement in Denver.

Broncos coach Sean Payton is reportedly ‘enamored’ with Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy, who is currently drawing attention in Denver.

The Broncos have the No. 12 choice in the NFL Draft, but are seeking for a new quarterback since Russell Wilson is anticipated to leave.

Some observers predict McCarthy will be picked among the first ten picks, which may require the Broncos to trade up if they want to secure him.

‘There’s just a little bit of steam that’s beginning to develop locally that Sean Payton adores J.J. McCarthy,’ said KFAN reporter Paul Allen.

“He is a quarterback from a pro-style offense with a strong arm.” Over the weekend, a reputable source informed me that Payton is very interested in J.J. McCarthy.

McCarthy concluded the season with 2,991 yards, 22 touchdowns, and four interceptions in Michigan’s championship-winning season under Jim Harbaugh.

Harbaugh, who left Michigan for the Los Angeles Chargers, recently lauded his former quarterback during an appearance on The Herd with Colin Cowherd.

‘Arm skill, athleticism, the it-factor, and winning through mind-numbing repetition. Don’t be surprised if he’s the top quarterback off the board,” he remarked. ‘That is my prediction right no.

‘When people see J.J.’s ability to throw the ball, spin it, his athleticism, and intelligence.

Talk about “it-factor,” he has it. Because of his competitiveness, they get around him, dig in, and start talking to him.
Most draft analysts feel McCarthy is the fourth best quarterback prospect in this year’s draft, after only USC’s Caleb Williams, LSU’s Jayden Daniels, and UNC’s Drake Maye.

Wilson has struggled in Denver over the last two seasons, and ESPN’s Jeff Legwold recently declared that ‘almost no one in the league’ believes the 35-year-old quarterback will return.

The nine-time Pro Bowler was benched for the final two games of the season due to what Broncos head coach Sean Payton called a ‘football decision.

Although many suspected that the move was made to keep Wilson from getting harmed due to the $37 million guaranteed for the 2025 season if he suffered an injury and was unable to pass a physical by the fifth day of the new league year in March.

Wilson claimed the team gave him an ultimatum to either alter the guarantee or sit out the rest of the season shortly after he produced a victory over the Kansas City Chiefs.

The 2013 Super Bowl champion signed a five-year, $242.6 million contract in 2022 and is already guaranteed $39 million in 2024.
