Seahawks Update: $63 Million DT Posts Message After Surprise Trade

When the Seattle Seahawks acquired defensive lineman Leonard Williams from the New York Giants before to the trade deadline on October 31, they created quite a stir.

Williams, who was in the last year of a $63 million contract, was traded to the Giants for a 2024 second-round selection and a 2025 fifth-round selection. The Pro Bowler was ecstatic to get out of New York, a team that had dropped six of its previous eight games.

Prior to Monday, October 30, when both teams made the huge trade formal public, Williams posted on his Instagram page the NFL’s post that included all of the first responses to the impending move. “The first-place @seahawks just got better 👀,” the caption said.

After defeating the Cleveland Browns in Week 8, the Seahawks (5-2) took over first place in the NFC West. Adding the former No. 6 overall choice from the 2015 NFL draft will significantly strengthen Seattle’s defensive line.

Williams, 29, said a sorrowful farewell to New York, where he has performed since 2019, in a second post on Monday.

“It has been a privilege to be a part of the Giants organization and everything it stands for; this place will always have a special place in my heart,” he said as the post’s caption. I want to express my gratitude to all of the teammates, coaches, staff, and supporters that have helped me during my time here. It’s been real, NY.

“Now it’s time to continue my career back in the west coast. Seattle here we come ! GO HAWKS!!!”

Safety of Seahawks Linebacker Uchenna Nwosu shared the image on his Instagram Stories and remarked, “Let’s go!!” Julian added, “Let’s rock Big Cat!” @leonardwilliams, my doggie.

Pete Carroll Said He Likes ‘Everything’ About Leonard Williams

Following the announcement of the trade, Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll addressed the media and stated that Williams’ medical examination at the team’s headquarters on Tuesday is a must for the move to be finalized.

Carroll said, “Oh man, everything,” when asked what the 6-foot-5, 302 lb. tackle liked about him. “Anything.”

Regarding the former USC star, Carroll remarked, “We’ve watched him for a long time and have known him for a good while, a Trojan and all that.” “He is an excellent football player. He is the type of person who can influence games. He’s an extremely pleasant player.

Carroll praised the veteran, saying, “He’s been doing that for a long part of his career and he’s really good at it.” “He’s a versatile all-around player who can rush the passer, create problems for his opponent, and run and pass.” He’s a great young man who possesses leadership and competitiveness qualities, making him an excellent addition to any squad.

The Seahawks Obtained Leonard Williams at a Massive Discount

Williams’ enormous deal would have made it impossible for the Seahawks to make a trade, but for the rest of the season, the Giants will pay the majority of Williams’ $10 million salary, according to ESPN’s Brady Henderson.

The prorated portion of Williams’ $1.165 million veteran minimum base wage is around $647,000, which the Seahawks will owe him for the balance of the season, according to Henderson. As part of the deal, the teams agreed to reduce Williams’ $18 million basic pay to the vet minimum, leaving him with $10 million remaining. Williams received the remaining amount from the Giants as a signing bonus.

According to the New York Post, this will allow the Giants to save $4.6 million against their 2023 salary cap.

Carroll stated, “We’re competing,” in reference to the message this deal is sending to the other players on the squad. “The main goal of this is to improve and support our team. This is one of the last chances to do something along those lines, and [general manager] John [Schneider did a fantastic job of figuring out how to work it out and selecting the guy who truly fits and can be a part of this team.

“I can’t wait for our guys to meet Leonard and learn more about his personality and values. His competitive nature is really comparable to that of the boys in our program, so it will fit right in.”
