Seahawks Sign Veteran Quarterback in the news of Geno Smith’s Injuries

With Geno Smith injured, the Seattle Seahawks sign veteran quarterback Sean Mannion.

Prior to their road game against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, the Seattle Seahawks announced on Friday that they have added veteran quarterback Sean Mannion to their practice squad.

The quarterback Geno Smith was limited in Thursday’s practice because of a groin ailment, which is why the roster changes have occurred. Despite his ongoing arm and elbow injuries, Smith hasn’t missed a game this season.

The Seahawks’ decision to sign Mannion may indicate that they are at least somewhat concerned about Smith’s most recent injury. If he were called up, he would be Smith’s backup in case Drew Lock was injured.

Mannion, 31, was selected by the St. Louis Rams in the third round of the 2015 draft after being selected out of Oregon State. He was a member of the team for four seasons prior to his 2019 trade to the Minnesota Vikings.

Though he has played in 14 games overall, Mannion is 0-3 when starting. During his NFL career, he has completed 67 of 110 passes for 573 yards, one touchdown, and three interceptions.

Of course, against a top-tier Niners defense that tormented Smith and company in their Thanksgiving game one encounter, Seattle’s quarterback movements might not matter all that much.

Smith is aware of the difficulty that lies ahead.

“It begins at the front. There are first rounders everywhere with them, Smith stated on Thursday. “They have excellent edge rushers and incredibly strong inside linemen. They have one of the best front sevens in the entire league. You discuss their core group of linebackers and how they fly and create plays all over the field.

They play excellent defense and are a fantastic squad, so we can expect them to be true to themselves, but we also have a fantastic attack. We have, in my opinion, a great chance to demonstrate our abilities and what we have always known about ourselves. For us, this is an excellent test. They make a fantastic team, and we are excited about the chance.
