Seahawks Sign tackle, Waive Jake Curhan

Jason Peters, a tackle, was added to the Seattle Seahawks 53-man roster on Saturday after his agency announced his possible signing on Friday afternoon.

He will play against the Los Angeles Rams in Week 11.

As part of an offensive line trade, Seattle waived third-year tackle/guard Jake Curhan to make room for Peters. In addition, the team promoted practice squad member and undrafted rookie safety Ty Okada to the NFL to start the regular season as a special teams reinforcement.

After starting players Charles Cross and Abraham Lucas were injured in the team’s opening loss to the Rams, Peters signed with the Seahawks as a free agent. He eventually made his team debut in Week 8 against the Browns, filling in for starter Stone Forsythe at right tackle. Promoted from the practice squad for three straight weeks, he had his best performance of the season last weekend against the Commanders, putting up just one pressure on 34 pass protection reps and controlling the run game.

While Forsythe might still start in Sunday’s rematch against the Rams, Peters saw the most of the reps in Week 10 despite being fully recovered. After arguably his best game to date, he could be the Seahawks’ starting quarterback until Lucas eventually makes a comeback in the upcoming weeks. This is assuming he stays on the active roster.

On Wednesday and Thursday of this week, Lucas—who has been on injured reserve since Week 1—practiced in a limited capacity. However, coach Pete Carroll said on Friday that he wouldn’t be ready to return this weekend in Los Angeles and that Seattle needed a little more time to assess him on the field.

Curhan will now be available on the waiver wire, which is a bit of a surprise considering that he started multiple games earlier in the season at right tackle in lieu of Lucas and also saw some action at guard. Due to his starting experience and versatility, it’s unlikely that another team will claim him; instead, Seattle will probably try to re-sign him to the practice squad, filling the spot left by Peters’ signing to the 53-man roster.

The Seahawks, sensing that Curhan was the odd man out, elected to risk losing the veteran on the waiver wire by keeping undrafted rookie tackles McClendon Curtis and Raiqwon O’Neal on the active roster.

After signing with Seattle as an undrafted free agent in August after attending Montana State, Okada made an impression in exhibition play. He made a tackle in kick coverage in addition to his six combined tackles and tackle for loss on defense; his performance was good enough to keep him on the practice squad so he could continue to improve in a talented, deep safety group.

Before moving to the NFL, Okada was a standout player for the FCS Bobcats, recording 73 tackles, an interception, two fumble recoveries, and a second straight season of Second Team All-Big Sky honors. Soon after the 2023 NFL Draft ended, the Seahawks signed him as a priority free agent after he made an impression with a strong pro day performance.
