Seahawks set to Make ‘Deadline Blockbuster’ Trade for 38-TD QB

The Seattle Seahawks could find themselves looking for a new franchise quarterback in the middle of the season.

Bleacher Report’s Brad Gagnon considers the Seahawks as a possible trade deadline destination for Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott as part of a series of “bold” trade predictions. The scenario would be based on the Cowboys proving to be more of a pretender than a contender early in the season, resulting in Dallas trading their three-time Pro Bowl quarterback at the trade deadline as he enters the final year of his deal.

“Quarterbacks seldom relocate in the middle of a season, but the majority of the ingredients are present in this scenario. Now, if a contender suffers a catastrophic quarterback injury, or if a team like Las Vegas or Seattle finds itself in contention despite its quarterback situation, a deadline blockbuster featuring Prescott is possible,” says Gagnon.

Why the Seahawks Could Move on From Geno Smith

The Seahawks making a move for another quarterback is not a wild concept. While Geno Smith has appeared in the Pro Bowl in each of the last two years, the Seahawks have yet to win a playoff game. In reality, Smith has never won a playoff game in his career, and Seattle’s failure to make the playoffs last season doesn’t help.

Given that the Seahawks have a new administration in head coach Mike Macdonald and offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb, they aren’t as attached to Smith as former head coach Pete Carroll, who anointed Smith his starter prior to the 2022 season, was over the previous two seasons.

It’s no coincidence that Macdonald waited a while before naming Smith his starting quarterback for the 2024 season. This uncertainty came after the Seahawks traded for former Washington Commanders main quarterback Sam Howell during the offseason.

If Smith falters or is sluggish early in the season, the Seahawks may decide that acquiring Prescott will help them get over the hump. Prescott recently had a career-best season in total touchdowns (38), completions (410) and passer rating (105.9). He was the runner-up in MVP voting during the 2023 season.

Why Cowboys Could Move Dak Prescott at Trade Deadline

Despite his stellar year, the Cowboys and Prescott are still trying to make progress in contract negotiations.

Gagnon also notes that he believes the Philadelphia Eagles, not the Cowboys, are the team to beat in the NFC East. Dallas is the reigning division winner, although Philadelphia began the season 10-1 before falling at the finish, earning a wild card berth. Furthermore, the Eagles won the division in 2022 before reaching the Super Bowl.

Five of the Cowboys’ first eight opponents this season—all before the trade deadline—were playoff teams in 2023. That means we’ll have a solid notion of where the Cowboys stand as a team before the deadline of November 5.

If the Cowboys make Prescott available without a long-term contract deal in place, the Seahawks might emerge as a possible landing site if Smith’s numbers fall in 2024.
