Seahawks List: Geno Smith and 7 others questionable to play against 49ers

The Seattle Seahawks designated Geno Smith as questionable to face the San Francisco 49ers this weekend, potentially without their starting quarterback.

The Seattle Seahawks have categorized quarterback Geno Smith as questionable for Sunday’s road rematch against the San Francisco 49ers after he appeared on the injury report with a new groin ailment on Thursday.

Seattle signed veteran quarterback Sean Mannion to the practice squad on Friday morning, reuniting him with offensive coordinator Shane Waldron, who was already preparing for the worst-case scenario. The former Oregon State standout worked out with the team during the 2022 season and would act as a backup behind Drew Lock if Smith is unable to play this weekend.

Aside from Smith, the Seahawks have designated six other players as questionable for Sunday’s game against the 49ers, including running backs Ken Walker III and Zach Charbonnet, who were upgraded to limited after practice on Thursday after sitting out the previous day. Walker has been out with an oblique strain for the past two games, and Charbonnet hurt his knee late in last week’s loss to the Cowboys.

In addition to Walker and/or Charbonnet, Seattle has fourth-year back DeeJay Dallas and rookie Kenny McIntosh on the 53-man roster. Earlier in the day, the team dismissed rookie SaRodorick Thompson Jr. to make room on the practice squad for Mannion.

Third-year receiver Dee Eskridge received a questionable classification after sitting out last week’s loss in Dallas due to bruised ribs, while fellow wideout Dareke Young was not on the final injury report after missing the previous three games with an abdominal issue.

On defense, linebacker Jordyn Brooks was designated questionable despite missing practice on Wednesday and Thursday with what coach Pete Carroll described as a “medial” ankle injury. Depending on his availability, veteran Devin Bush should see play against the 49ers as a starter or rotating reserve opposite Bobby Wagner.

Furthermore, nose tackle Jarran Reed appeared on the final injury report with a hamstring issue. The veteran defense was not noted on Seattle’s injury report on Wednesday or Thursday, implying that the new injury occurred during this week’s practice.

If Reed is unable to play, the Seahawks’ defensive line will be significantly thinner, though Leonard Williams should be fine after missing practice earlier in the week due to an ankle ailment. After being a healthy scratch in four of the previous five games, third-year reserve Myles Adams would be the next in line to return to the lineup.

Tre Brown, the starting cornerback, was also designated as questionable in the secondary due to a heel ailment. For the past few weeks, the third-year defensive back has been struggling with persistent injuries, including a sprained toe that has cost him practice time.
