Seahawks could make a’surprise’ quarterback move in 2024

As the Seattle Seahawks strive to rescue their season, whispers regarding potential quarterbacks are circulating.

Seattle has Geno Smith under contract until 2025, but the Seahawks have been considered as a possible landing destination for a quarterback in the future months.

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Seahawks could be a “surprise participant in the QB market” this offseason.

“Yeah, Seattle feels like a team to watch, depending on how the rest of the season shakes out,” Fowler wrote in a December 6, 2023 piece titled “NFL Week 14 latest buzz, fantasy tips, and upset predictions.”

“Geno Smith’s guaranteed money runs out in 2023.” But that doesn’t mean the Seahawks are ready to let go. Smith is a good starter coming off a 334-yard performance against Dallas, and his salary hit of $31.2 million next season is reasonable for NFL starters.

“However, if Seattle decides to go young at quarterback, Smith’s future is in jeopardy.” The Seahawks have spent the last two years strengthening their whole roster in preparation for the post-Russell Wilson future. Soon, that might involve selecting a quarterback in the first round.”

Seahawks Rumors: Geno Smith’s Deal Allows Seattle to Move on in 2024

According to Fowler, the Seahawks have the option to keep Smith through 2024. The veteran’s three-year, $75 million contract expires in 2025. Because Seattle has an out in Smith’s contract this summer, there is a lot of speculation about his future.

Financially, it would be preferable for Seattle to keep Smith in order to avoid a $17.4 million dead cap penalty by releasing the quarterback. Given how many teams require quarterbacks, the Seahawks could consider trading the veteran. Seattle conducted their homework on quarterbacks during the offseason, according to ESPN’s Dan Graziano.

“Yeah, the Seahawks did look around at the QBs in the 2023 draft when they had the No. 5 pick from the Wilson trade with the Broncos,” he said.

NFL Draft 2024: Top Quarterbacks Are Projected to Be Gone When the Seahawks Pick

The draft is the easiest approach to find a new franchise quarterback. It may be difficult for Seattle to locate someone who would be deemed a potential enhancement to the team’s current predicament.

The Seahawks have the 13th pick in the 2024 NFL draft heading into Week 15.In his latest mock draft, The Athletic’s Dane Brugler has the top three quarterbacks going inside the top ten.

According to Brugler, USC’s Caleb Williams, North Carolina’s Drake Maye, and LSU’s Jayden Daniels are all expected to go in the top seven choices. Smith hasn’t been flawless this season, but the Seahawks have a lot of weaknesses. This will not stop the Seahawks rumors from swirling if Seattle’s season does not improve.

This was on full show in Week 15 when Drew Lock filled in well for Smith, but the club made too many errors to overcome. Earlier this season, Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll explained what he would need to see before making a quarterback move.

“It should be an obvious situation where a guy isn’t doing his part, and you have to declare where the issues are,” Carroll said in an interview with Seattle Sports’ “Brock and Salk” on November 6.”Is it because the men up front are inconsistent? Are we not following our routes correctly? Isn’t it true that we’re calling the game for him?

“We have to call all of the quarterback’s games.” They’re crucial, and we need to make sure we’re doing our share. So there are many parts to that.
