Pittman remarked, “I was looking for a hard-nosed guy.” “Someone who advocated for physicality.” A man who would advocate for responsibility, toughness, and other similar traits. He had a meeting with the offensive side of the ball team today. His message to them was not only crystal clear, but it was also precisely what we had discussed during the interview process regarding his potential contribution to the program.
Toughness, a passion for Arkansas, running the ball, and being able to do pretty much anything we want—pass or run—are the key components. It goes without saying that we faced him in games against Missouri State and Texas A&M, and overall, I felt he was an excellent play-caller. I wasn’t sure whether we could get him, but whenever he called, he was really (inaudible) right away, which is something I think we needed.”
ON PRIOR RELATIONSHIP WITH PETRINO
“Obviously, everybody in the state knows who Bobby Petrino is,” Pittman stated. “You know how it’s possible to feel as though you know someone even though you don’t truly know them? That’s how I felt. Very, very comfortable chat at Missouri State, and it was pretty much the only occasion I had with him. Of course, I spoke with a number of others who had worked with and knew him personally.
After doing my research there and seeing excellent evaluations, I spoke with him and said, “Okay.” Many of the individuals I know laud him for being an excellent coach as well as for being a wonderful person. It was a no-brainer, to be honest with you. We talked several times and it was a no-brainer.”
HOW IT WENT DOWN
Pittman remarked, “I just picked up that old cell phone.” “I gave him a call. His number was given to me by a few people, so I called him. After a little conversation, I asked him if he would be interested in returning. He desires to be present. I believe he does. I got the impression over the phone that he truly wanted to be back in Arkansas, but you’ll have to speak with him about all the reasons he chose to return. That was very meaningful to me as well.”
THE TEAM’S REACTION
Pittman remarked, “They were very attentive (inaudible).” “I set the meeting late, maybe about noon today, November 11, and the meeting was at 5:15. There were three or four people who weren’t in there just because I wasn’t sure what time the meeting would be. However, they paid close attention. I introduced him, and I’m sure that portion caught his interest because he had an amazing resume. Nowadays, thanks to social media, everyone is aware of everything, with the possible exception of the truth (lol). The recruiting path is where we really shine… (Inaudible)”
WHAT’S NEXT?
“We are going to — obviously we’re in tomorrow because it’s still dead (period), but Coach and I are going to see every offensive player that’s committed to us,” Pittman stated. “We need to put a lot of effort into the gateway. It will take a lot of work to replace some of the folks we need to. (inaudible).”
PORTAL TALK
Regarding which positions he believes Arkansas should prioritize filling through the transfer portal, Pittman answered a fan’s query.
“Offensive line, we’re going to need to get a transfer quarterback, corner and safety, and then we’ve got to get a linebacker or two,” he stated.
