Running backs coach will make $850,000 this year at Michigan

To no one’s surprise, Tony Alford’s transfer to Michigan includes a wage bump.

Alford signed a three-year contract with the Wolverines for a basic salary of $850,000, up from $772,500 with Ohio State last year, according to The Columbus Dispatch.

In addition to his base salary, Alford received a $131,325 incentive from Ohio State for the team’s Cotton Bowl appearance last season.

In 2024, the former nine-year Buckeyes coach will also serve as Michigan’s running game coordinator. Alford was hired by the Wolverines to replace Mike Hart, and his contract was slated to expire at the end of last season. He was not among the assistants who received announced extensions this offseason.

Ohio State has yet to find a replacement for Alford, but Ryan Day stated on Tuesday that “the candidate pool has been excellent” and there is no rush to fill the position. Meanwhile, Day is in charge of coaching the running backs.

Oklahoma running back coach DeMarco Murray, who was rumored to be one of those possibilities, allegedly declined the Ohio State position on Wednesday after being offered a new three-year deal to continue with the Sooners, where he played throughout his NCAA career.
